MORNING STANLEY CUP OF JOE – MAY 15, 2013
PITTSBURGH 4, OTTAWA 1; PIT leads 1-0
The Penguins scored three special teams goals (two on the power play, one shorthanded) and Tomas Vokoun made 35 saves for his third consecutive victory since taking over the starting job.
LOS ANGELES 2, SAN JOSE 0; LA leads 1-0
Jonathan Quick stopped all 35 pucks he faced to record his sixth career postseason shutout and Slava Voynov’s goal with 12.5 seconds remaining in the first period held up as the game-winner.
Los Angeles goaltender Jonathan Quick made 35 saves to register his sixth career playoff shutout and second this postseason. With the shutout, Quick lowered his career goals-against average to 1.98 in 39 playoff games. Eleven other goaltenders in NHL history have compiled a goals-against average lower than 2.00 with at least 20 games of postseason experience. Of those, only Patrick Lalime has played in the last 50 years. (Elias Sports Bureau)
Los Angeles defenseman Slava Voynov has three game-winning goals in seven games this postseason, a franchise record for a blueliner in a single playoff year. He has four game-winning goals in 102 career regular-season games.
Pittsburgh forward Evgeni Malkin recorded 1-1—2 Tuesday, extending his postseason assist/point streak to seven games (3-10—13). Malkin is the first NHL player to collect assists in each of his team’s first seven games of a playoff year since 1999, when Colorado’s Peter Forsberg and Boston’s Jason Allison both did so. (Elias Sports Bureau)
Pittsburgh forwards Jarome Iginla (2-8—10) and Pascal Dupuis (6-2—8) also extended their playoff point streaks to seven games. Iginla’s eight assists this postseason are one shy of his career high, which he set in 26 games during the 2004 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Dupuis’ shorthanded goal, the first of postseason career, was his League-best sixth score in the playoffs.
The Penguins went 2-for-4 on the power play; they lead the League with nine power-play goals and a 36.0% power-play efficiency rate this postseason.
Pittsburgh also killed off all five power-play opportunities against, improving to 27-3 this season (regular season and playoffs) when not allowing a power-play goal.
ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN
Four of the eight remaining playoff clubs ranked outside the top 10 of the League’s overall standings in 2012 13. Last year, the Kings went on to win the Stanley Cup after finishing 13th in the NHL’s regular-season standings.
