MORNING STANLEY CUP OF JOE – MAY 13, 2013
SUNDAY’S RESULTS

[1]NY RANGERS 1, WASHINGTON 0; series tied 3-3 Henrik Lundqvist made 27 saves for his seventh career playoff shutout and Derick Brassard scored the lone goal midway through the second period to help the Rangers hold serve at home and force a Game 7.

TORONTO 2, BOSTON 1; series tied 3-3
Dion Phaneuf and Phil Kessel scored early in the third period to break a scoreless tie and James Reimer made 29 saves – but came 24.5 seconds shy of recording his first career postseason shutout – to lift the Maple Leafs to their first home playoff victory since April 30, 2004.

DETROIT 3, ANAHEIM 2; DET wins 4-3
Henrik Zetterberg put Detroit ahead 1:49 into the game and the Red Wings never trailed en route to picking up their 14th Game 7 victory in franchise history and setting up a second-round matchup with the Blackhawks.

RED WINGS ADVANCE
The Red Wings came back from a 3-2 series deficit to advance to the Western Conference Semifinals. Detroit improved to 14-9 all-time in Game 7s, including a 3-4 record on the road. The Red Wings’ 14 wins in Game 7s are the most by any franchise in NHL history.

CAPTAIN LEADS THE WAY
Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg scored less than two minutes after the opening face-off to give Detroit an early lead. The goal was the 54th of Zetterberg’s postseason career, tying him with Nicklas Lidstrom for third in franchise history. Zetterberg recorded 3-4—7 and a +4 rating in the last three games after totaling 0-1—1 and a -1 rating in the first four games of the series.

PLAYOFF PERFORMER
Valtteri Filppula’s goal at 13:45 of the second period proved to be the game-winner for the Red Wings. Filppula has 18 career postseason goals, four of which have been game-winners. In fact, his last three playoff goals (dating to 2011) have all been decisive tallies.

WEST MATCHUPS SET
With Detroit’s win, the two matchups for the Western Conference Semifinals have been set: the No. 1 Blackhawks will face the No. 7 Red Wings, while the No. 5 Kings will play the No. 6 Sharks.

BIG RALLY
The Maple Leafs are the 48th team in NHL history to overcome a 3-1 series deficit to force a Game 7. The teams that won Games 5 and 6 are 24-23 all-time in Game 7.

The Maple Leafs are 1-13 all-time in series when trailing 3-1; their lone comeback was against the Red Wings in 1942, when they overcame a 3-0 series deficit to win the Stanley Cup.

LONG TIME COMING
The Maple Leafs’ 2-1 victory snapped a seven-game home playoff losing streak to the Bruins. Their last home postseason win over Boston was on March 31, 1959, when Frank Mahovlich scored the game-winning goal in overtime.

KESSEL BURNS FORMER CLUB
Phil Kessel’s goal at 8:59 of the third period proved to be the game-winner, his second of the series (also in Game 2). Only two other former Boston players have had two game-winning goals against the Bruins in a playoff series: Reggie Leach for the Flyers in 1976 and Gary Ehman for the Maple Leafs in 1959. Kessel has 3-1—4 so far in the six-game series; he has 3-6—9 in 22 career regular-season games against the Bruins. (Elias)

HOME-ICE ADVANTAGE
The home team has won every game in the Rangers-Capitals series. The Rangers also improved to 4-0 in their last four home games when facing elimination. (Elias)

Overall, home teams are 29-16 (.644) in the opening round of the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Last year, home clubs went 18-30 (.375) in the first round of the postseason, the lowest winning percentage since the NHL switched to the 16-team playoff format in 1979-80.

KING HENRIK
Henrik Lundqvist made 27 saves to help the Rangers stave off elimination, marking his second career shutout when the Rangers were one loss away from a postseason exit. The other came in 2008, when Lundqvist kept the Rangers alive with a 3-0 victory in Game 4 of their second-round series against the Penguins. The only other playoff shutouts by Rangers goaltenders in which the team faced elimination were by Joe “Red Light” Miller (1928), John Ross Roach (1929) and John Vanbiesbrouck (1986). (Elias)

1-0 MARGINS
From 1941-2008, the Rangers had zero 1-0 postseason wins; they have three such victories since then (all by Henrik Lundqvist), including two against the Capitals.

The Rangers and Capitals both have authored 1-0 victories in their series (Washington did so in Game 2); the last time both clubs recorded 1-0 wins in the same playoff series was in the 2004 Western Conference Semifinals, when the Sharks and Avalanche each did so in back-to-back games.

SPECIAL TEAMS
The Capitals fell to 0-3 in the playoffs when failing to score a power-play goal (they didn’t have any opportunities with the man advantage Sunday).
Washington is 3-for-9 (33.3%) on the power play at home this postseason, but 0-for-5 (0.0%) on the road. The Capitals led the NHL with a 26.8% power-play success rate during the regular season, including a League-high 26.5% rate as visitors.

DID YOU KNOW?
The Rangers and Capitals are the first NHL teams to play each other in a Game 7 in back-to-back years since the Avalanche and Kings in 2001 and 2002. The Rangers won last year’s Game 7 by a 2-1 margin. (Elias)

TORONTO SUPPORT

LOOSE PUCKS
Washington forward Alex Ovechkin was held off the scoresheet for the fourth consecutive game, the longest postseason drought of his career . . . Justin Abdelkader scored the first shorthanded goal of his career (regular season or playoffs) . . . Emerson Etem scored the equalizer for the Ducks midway through the first period, becoming the youngest player in Anaheim history
(20 years, 10 months) to tally in a Game 7 . . . Washington forward Tom Wilson lost a skate blade and had to crawl back to the bench.
