2013 NHL Draft Lightning Make Six Picks

TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning made six picks at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Sunday, including selecting Jonathan Drouin with the third overall pick. In total, the Lightning selected five forwards and one goaltender in the draft.
The Lightning used their third overall pick to select forward Jonathan Drouin from the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Drouin, 18, skated in 49 games with the Mooseheads last season, registering 41 goals and 105 points to go along with 32 penalty minutes. He ranked first on the Mooseheads in goals, assists (64), points and shorthanded goals with four. The Ste-Agathe, Quebec native also led all Moosehead forwards with a plus-48 rating during the regular season. He ranked second in the QMJHL in points, third in assists and ranked tied for seventh for goals. Drouin also skated in 17 playoff games, recording 12 goals and 35 points with 14 penalty minutes. He helped the Mooseheads win the Memorial Cup, recording five assists in the championship game against the Portland Winterhawks.
With the 33rd overall pick in the second round, Tampa Bay drafted forward Adam Erne from the Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL. The 6-foot, 210-pound forward played in 68 games with the Remparts last season, collecting 28 goals and 72 points to go along with 67 penalty minutes. The New Haven, Connecticut native led Quebec in points and assists with 44. Erne also skated in 11 playoff games, registering five goals and 10 points. He ranked tied for second on the Remparts in playoff points and goals.
In the fifth round, the Lightning selected goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis with the 124th overall pick in the draft. The Aizkraukle, Latvia native appeared in 56 games with Riga-2 of the Russia Junior League last season, posting a 2.09 goals-against average and .927 save percentage. The 6-foot-3, 187-pound goaltender also played in two games with Riga of the KHL, recording a 2.18 goals-against average and .921 save percentage.
With the 154th overall pick in the sixth round, the Lightning drafted forward Henri Ikonen from the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League. The 6-foot, 198-pound forward played in 61 games with the Frontenacs last season, posting 22 goals and 51 points to go along with 30 penalty minutes. The Savonlinna, Finland native led Kingston in points and ranked second for assists with 29. Ikonen ranked tied for first on the team in power play goals with five and his plus-two rating ranked tied for first on Kingston. He also skated in four OHL playoff games, registering a goal and four penalty minutes.
In the seventh round, Tampa Bay chose Saku Salminen from Jokerit of the Finnish Elite League with the 184th overall pick. The 6-foot-3, 187-pound forward skated in 13 games with Jokerit last season, recording a goal and two points to go along with 12 penalty minutes. The Helsinki, Finland native also played for K-Vantaa of the second tier Finnish league, collecting a goal and five points.
The Lightning selected Joel Vermin from Bern of Switzerland’s National League-A with the 186th overall pick in the seventh round. The 5-foot-11, 192-pound forward skated in 47 games last season with Bern, recording 13 goals and 35 points to go along with 14 penalty minutes. Vermin skated in 19 playoff games, posting three goals and nine points for Bern. The Frauenkappelen, Switzerland native has appeared in 128 career games with Bern over the past four seasons, amassing 25 goals and 63 points to go along with 20 penalty minutes.
