2013 FSU Spring Breakdown: Quarterbacks

“Who’s the man?” Without a doubt, the biggest question on the minds of Seminole fans everywhere is just who will step up and be the future for FSU at the quarterback position this fall. With the departure of longtime starter EJ Manuel, the Noles must replace not only a talented senior leader, but the most proficient passer in Florida State history. While it’s very unlikely that Seminole fans will get any sort of answer after the spring game, they will have a good idea of which quarterback bandwagon they are jumping on. Jimbo Fisher knows the type of quarterback he wants to run his offense, and FSU fans should get behind whoever it is that Jimbo tags to be “the man.” In Jimbo We Trust. Let the best Nole win.
Let’s get one thing clear – redshirt junior Clint Trickett is the incumbent starter, coach Jimbo Fisher even said so himself before spring practice began. Does that mean that Trickett will be the starter come opening night in Pittsburgh? Not by a long shot, but it does help his chances. Also helping Trickett’s chances are his experience, the fact that he has actually started at the collegiate level and his vast knowledge of Jimbo’s massive playbook. (Trick Daddy is entering his fourth season as a Nole) His downsides are the fact that he is rail thin and lacks the arm strength and mobility of the other quarterback challengers. He is a gutsy player, a fierce competitor and a safety valve to step in just in case he doesn’t win the starting job this fall.
…..and then there’s redshirt freshman Jameis Winston. Ahh yes, that Jameis Winston. The kid was all everything coming out of high school, and is pulling double duty this spring with the FSU baseball and football teams. Winston has an ultra-magnetic personality and the skill set to make pro scouts drool. (Just ask Trent Dilfer) Winston seemingly has it all, except one major flaw – he has yet to even take a snap in an actual college football game. The hype and excitement over Winston is warranted, and the buzz around this kid can only do great things for the program. I’m not a big fan of anointing someone “the next whoever” based on hype, but I am very excited to see what Winston can do when he finally gets under the lights at Doak Campbell Stadium.
Another word of advice, don’t sleep on redshirt sophomore Jacob Coker, either. Coker has a big, prototypical NFL body (6’6”/235) and unlike former Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett, this kid can move. His team back in high school ran the triple option, so Coker is very quick on his feet while still maintaining a rocket arm. He has been slightly hampered by an ankle injury this spring, but I’m nowhere near counting this kid out. He may even win the job come fall, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit.
Also in the mix is talented redshirt freshman Sean Maguire. Maguire is about the same size as former Seminole Christian Ponder, but I have yet to see what he can do. Maguire also has the burden of being “the other freshman QB not named Jameis Winston” on the roster, but from all reports the kid is a baller. We’ll see what he can do at the spring game.
Returning For Spring: (class year denotes 2013-14 season)
