2013 FSU Spring Breakdown: Linebackers
The Noles return some serious headhunters at the linebacker position for 2013. Leading tackler Christian Jones (95 tackles / 7 tackles for loss) decided to hold off on leaving for the NFL and returns alongside fellow senior Telvin Smith (64 tackles / 10 tackles for loss / 1 sack). The experience of Jones and Smith will be huge for the Seminole defense this season after the graduation of playmker Vince Williams in the middle. Stepping in for Williams will either be redshirt sophomore Terrance Smith or true sophomore Reggie Northrup. Both are extremely talented and will likely see plenty of playing time regardless of who is named the starter. Odds are that senior Telvin Smith will slide over to middle (mike) linebacker, although nothing has been set in stone as of yet.
The rest of the main linebacker rotation includes redshirt freshman Ukeme Eligwe, who could back up the mike spot, and redshirt junior Nigel Terrell on the outside. The defensive scheme brought in by new defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt will allow for the linebackers to be more aggressive with blitzes, creating havoc in the backfield and causing more big plays defensively. It should be a very productive year for this group.
