2013 FSU Spring Breakdown: Defensive Backs

Alright, I’ll go ahead and say it – the 2013 Florida State secondary is the best in the country. Even with the loss of cornerback Xavier Rhodes to the NFL, the Noles return enough talent to control the not-so-friendly skies of Doak Campbell Stadium. Senior Lamarcus Joyner moves to the corner position after spending his career at safety, and the best pound-for-pound athlete on the roster should have no problems with the adjustment. Junior Nick Waisome made the most of his opportunity last season, and the heavy hitter seems like the favorite to step in and make an impact starting opposite Joyner. Sophomore speedster Ronald Darby, who was named ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year, and junior playmaker Tyler Hunter fill out the two-deep at the corner spot. With Joyner, Waisome, Darby and Hunter, the Noles will rotate four elite defenders who could easily be first and second team All-ACC, respectively. No Joke. Sophomore P.J. Williams should have a break-out spring with three players out due to injury.
If, by some crazy fluke or slip on the grass that a wide receiver makes it past one of the corners, they should fully expect to pay the price with their head. Safety Karlos Williams will be waiting, and he won’t be happy to see you. Williams is a freak athlete at the safety spot, and has shown flashes of dominance during his time on the field. This year he will be a starter, with the sole purpose of tracking down and head-hunting opposing players. Just like the Predator, but with pads. Terrence Brooks holds down the other safety spot and should have a strong senior season for the Noles. If other teams want to consider Brooks the “weak link” of the secondary, go right ahead. Do it. I’m sure he’ll take very kindly to that. Rotating in at the safety spot will be experienced senior Gerald Demps and redshirt sophomore Lamarcus Brutus.
