USF Football Preview: Quarterbacks

A look at the quarterbacks…

The USF Bulls football team took the field Tuesday morning for the team’s first practice prior to their departure for Vero Beach.

In quarterback B.J. Daniels’ senior season, the team is more than ready to put its 5-7 record last season behind them.

“Everybody is joking, saying I’m the old man on the team,” he said. “It means I have to hurry up and do something. There’s a sense of urgency to step up as a leader on and off the field and trying to help out the younger guys.”

Daniels will undoubtedly have to record his best season at USF for the Bulls to achieve their long awaited goal of winning the Big East. Recording better numbers is something he is fully capable of especially after the season he had in 2011.

The senior had his best year last season, passing for 2,585 yards, rushing for 601, and scoring 20 touchdowns (13 rushing, 7 passing). However, he will have to be better this season if the Bulls are going to contend for a conference championship.

What’s the difference with the senior quarterback this season?

According to Daniels,  being more mature helps him not to over-analyze plays.

“All in all don’t turn the ball over,” Daniels said. “Just being consistent and know that one play shouldn’t effect your next play.”

Daniels has also been in the same offense under Skip Holtz for three seasons. The familiarity is also helping him improve.

The biggest question though is who will back Daniels up this season.

The battle over the backup quarterback position is a pretty tight one with both Bobby Eveld and Matt Floyd competing for the gig.

Eveld has been the Bulls’ backup under Daniels for two seasons but redshirt freshman Floyd has been giving Eveld some fierce competition since spring.

“They are both getting better and bigger and faster, you can see now in the summer that they are having more of a leadership role and guys are coming to them…to try and understand the offense,” Daniels said.

The Bulls depart for Vero Beach on Aug 8. The time spent there will be used for Holtz and other coaches to get a finalized depth chart prior to the start of the season.

Until then, the backup gig is up for grabs.
